A list of the most influential street photographers of the past century."The essential attribute of street photography is chance - and that's likely why we're so drawn to it. Unlike documentary photographers, who wish to tell an overarching story of the subjects and places they capture, often for news publications, street photographers take photographs of fleeting moments that may exist outside of a greater narrative. Often, they are only meaningful for the single moment they capture. The street photographers of the world might envy photographers who take portraits or stage photo shoots. The latter group gets to control and create an image before taking it, which seems a hell of a lot easier than being able to get the perfect moment on camera as it occurs spontaneously. The street photographer has to wait for just the right moment to capture something worth shooting. The whole point of street photography is to capture happenstance - unplanned moments in public space. Often this involves humans sometimes doing funny things, like tripping or making strange expressions, but sometimes street photography just captures the photographer's surroundings. Although it can be similar to architectural photography, it doesn't have to focus on the structures in front of a lens. Instead, the focus of a street photograph is the composition of random objects coming together in a photographer's frame. The talented street photographer captures these chance happenings in a meaningful and engaging way. "

People, cafes, vendors, street merchants, buskers, historic buildings, art installations and much more. The power of observation underpins the art of great street photography. Learning to "see" interesting detail is a practised skill and we introduce you to easy methods that will open your photographer's eye and expose you to a world that is alive with detail. The most rewarding part of the class is learning how to approach interesting people and have them willingly pose for you.

We will also go over settings, focusing techniques and lens choices common to street photography to help us capture those random chance encounters.

Title or Location: Lunch Counter/ Madrid Spain
Went to Spain for 2 weeks a year ago. While thrilled to see the work of Velasquez, Goya, Microsoft and Picasso, it was a treat to be part of everyday life there. This was a scene I photographed at an enormous Farmers Market. The color of the bread caught my eye. Madrilenos have wine with lunch. So civilized.

This is the first painting I?ve done from my imagination, and my 5th watercolour painting. Done on a drizzly Sunday afternoon in between cooking a family dinner. I wanted to test a set of granulating paints for the first time to see what effects I could get, using only 1 colour granulating paint and Paynes Grey, it?s created quite a moody evening effect. I?m looking forward to learning more about watercolour and developing my skills.

Chester was the first pet I owned as an adult he was lost in flooding during a tornado in Oklahoma. I painted this with love, nostalgia, and playfulness in order to recapture the kitten I loved so dearly. He was so impetuous and silly, always looking for adventure. His spirit was, and is, a work of art.

Title or Location: Peace and Tranquility
I painted this from a photo I took on a visit to Ireland 25 years ago. The painting has been hanging on my sitting room wall or in a folder with other paintings for years this week I decided to add a solitary angler and called it Peace and Tranquility. I'll probably take it up to my brothers at Norham in the Borders and hang it on his sitting room wall.
